How do I know when I am ovulating?

Ovulation signs and symptoms

  • Breast sensitivity
  • Cramping of the abdomen
  • Increased vaginal secretions

Practical tools and tips to determine if you are ovulating:

  • Measure your basal body temperature
Almost all women have a visible increase in body temperature when they are ovulating. Take your temperature (orally) first thing in the morning before you get out of bed. Your fertile period starts two – three days before your temperature rises. Keep other factors like illness and insomnia in consideration as they will too influence your body temperature.
  • Ovulation kit
The test kit contains several test sticks which works on a urine sample and is used the same way as you would use a pregnancy test. It’s quite accurate and provides a way of detecting your most fertile period. A positive result shows that you are likely to ovulate within the next 24 – 36 hours, which means you should act now!
  • Ovulation Calculator
Use an online ovulation calculator to determine your most fertile days.
  • Monitor your vaginal secretions
A couple of days before ovulation your body produces more secretions than normal. It’s clear, slippery and resembles raw egg whites. These secretions are produced most on the day of ovulation, after that it becomes cloudy, thicker and decrease in quantity.
  • Lower abdomen pain AKA Mittelschmerz
Mittelschmerz is German for “middle” and “pain”. It’s also known as ovulation pain or mid-cycle pain. It’s a one-sided, lower abdomen pain that can switch to either side of your body. It may occur just before, during or after ovulation.
